Electric Road System (ERS) - An Emerging technology towards De-Carbonization

Image
BY  AFZAL YOUSAF An E lectric road system (ERS) or E-road is paved with technology that can charge vehicles traveling. Under the scenario of EVs gaining popularity as a sustainable mode of transport, their uptake is limited due to a lack of charging convenience, which is one of the main challenges ahead of EV adoption. Electric road systems are a great leap toward the smooth adoption of electric vehicles. ERS are road transportation systems based on technologies that support electric power transfer from roads to vehicles in motion. This technology in recent decade emerged as the best alternative to overcome the challenge faced by automotive companies on EV Charging convenience. ERS is suitable for all kinds of vehicles starting from passenger cars to long-haul freight vehicles and is projected to grow drastically in coming years to decarbonize the sector. Advantages of ERS ERS compared to other technologies, provides more advantages to the EV sector by reducing the size of batteries

Role of Artificial Intelligence in Electric vehicle technology

Image
BY  AFZAL YOUSAF In Automotive Industry, revolutionary technologies always played a major role in shaping the Industry. As automotive technology is shifting toward a sustainable future, EVs are in the pole position for the same. But Electric vehicle technology is still evolving and faces significant hurdles in its evolving phase. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a technological revolution that can change the entire graph of human lives and all Industries. In simple terms, we can say " Artificial Intelligence is the simulation of human intelligence process by machines to perform a task with the help of an in-built algorithm and available vast amount of data". In EV Technology, Artificial Intelligence has immense potential to overcome the hurdles faced and to enhance the driving experience. Artificial Intelligence is quickly recognized by the automotive industry and with the introduction of ADAS(Advanced driver assistance systems) to autonomous driving, AI is becoming more pop

Working of fuel cell electric vehicles using hydrogen

Image
BY  AFZAL YOUSAF As we know, Fuel cell electric vehicles are also a part of the paradigm shift that is currently underway in the electrification of transportation. In this article, we can go through the basic working of a Hydrogen fuel-cell electric vehicle and its key components. A Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV) is an electric vehicle that produces its own electricity through an electrochemical reaction. Using a Hydrogen Fuel Cell stack, the vehicle combines pure Hydrogen and Oxygen across a membrane to create water. Through this process, Electric current is generated. How does a Hydrogen Fuel cell electric vehicle work? Hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles use electricity generated through their electrochemical reaction to power an electric motor. The size of the fuel cell and Hydrogen tank is determined by the electric motor that has to power the vehicle. FCEVs will also have a battery to assist the fuel cells. This battery will mostly be used to recapture the regen power and p

Image
BY  AFZAL YOUSAF India's largest Motor show, Auto Expo 2023 was held in Greater Noida from January 11th to 18th. As the Auto Industry is accelerating towards electrification, Auto expo witnessed a dominance of electric cars in the passenger vehicle segment. They came in the form of Potential models for India and concepts. This article lists the Electric cars at Auto Expo 2023. 1. TATA HARRIER EV Tata is coming with an electric version of Harrier, which is in a near production-ready stage. Harrier EV is based on a combination of Omega-Arc and Gen 2 Electric platform. It is also expected to be an AWD with Dual motors. The vehicle will be loaded with advanced features like Telematics, Vehicle to load capabilities, and possibly ADAS too. 2. Maruti eVX Auto Expo 2023 was kick-started by Maruti Suzuki and the company has finally taken a definitive step toward EV with the eVX. The bold and stylish boxy SUV has a battery pack capacity of 60 kWh which gives a range of 500 km on a single ch

Electric Vehicles standards and regulations in India

Image
BY  AFZAL YOUSAF  The automobile industry is ongoing a paradigm shift globally. The past decade has been of Internal combustion engines, but the shift to electric vehicles has become necessary on behalf of faster depletion of fossil fuels, increase in energy cost, and concerns over climatic change. Considering EVs as the future mode of transportation and the increase in demand, all OEMs are obliged to ensure safety and ease of use for customers. This can only be met by robust testing and certification before the vehicle's launch. To achieve all these, standardization should be done and it will be under various government agencies. CMVR is a technical standard committee, AISC is the Automotive Indian standard committee,  Standing Committee on Emission Legislation-SCOE and Bureau of Indian Standards-BIS are the various govt. agencies that regulate the standards. Various components in EVs must be tested for their role in  the application, reliability, durability, safety, and efficienc

Axial vs Radial Flux Motors and Why Axial flux is a better engine for EVs

Image
BY  AFZAL YOUSAF In an Electric vehicle, Electric motors are the true driving force apart from Battery. It is the engine of electric vehicles and reports say around 100 million motors are required per year by 2032 to meet the EV Demands. Electric traction motors are first discovered in the 1800s but the technology is still evolving with improved technology, efficiency, and less rare earth materials. The basic operation of the electric motor is based on the electromagnetic interaction created by the structure coil and magnet. Based on the direction of the magnetic field, these motors are divided into:- Radial Flux Axial Flux The fundamental difference between both lies in the orientation of the magnetic field w.r.t the electric coils. Credits:- Linquip.com Radial Flux Radial flux motors are classic cylindrical shaped which produce flux perpendicular to the axis of rotation. Features of radial flux motors are designed on the sides and copper windings are wrapped around the slots.  In tra

Cell Selection Guide for Lithium ion Battery pack.

Image
BY  AFZAL YOUSAF As the world is in a path leading to massive adaption of electric vehicles, debates are also ongoing regarding the safety and risk involved in electric vehicles, especially in India due to recent incidents of electric scooters catching fire. Proper selection of battery pack and vigorous testing of the vehicle should be done before entering into the market. As battery pack is the most vital component in EVs, building the packs needs proper selection of cells to ensure vehicle performance and safety. Cell selection depends on multiple factors and here we can go through some of the important factors to be considered during the selection of cells in EV Battery pack. Cell Chemistry - Cells are manufactured with different chemistries, like different Anode and Cathode for various applications. Cell chemistry plays a major role in effectiveness, energy density, thermal stability of the cells. Though researches are ongoing to develop new cell types and chemistries, here we c
